Sand does not stick to this. That is the whole pitch, and if you have ever tried to shake out a beach towel in a breeze and then carried half the beach home in the boot of the car, it is enough of one. The weave is tight and smooth, so sand falls straight off rather than embedding itself in the fibres.

It is waterproof underneath, which is the difference between sitting on damp grass and standing back up with a wet patch, and it packs into an attached pouch roughly the size of a mandarin. Corner loops take pegs so it stays put in wind, and the fabric is a parachute-style nylon: light enough to carry without noticing, tough enough to lay on gravel, and quick to dry if it does get wet.

Three sizes: 120x70cm for one or two people, 145x100cm for a couple with a bag between them, and 200x145cm for a family or a group. Works for beaches, parks, campsites, festivals, sideline seating at sport, and as a groundsheet under a tent.
